Second helping for De Schutter

Excellent news that Olivier De Schutter has agreed to renew his mandate as UN Special Rapporteur on the right to food.

He has tirelessly promoted the unfashionable idea that 500 million poor farms can be part of the solution to world hunger. He has exposed the policymaking obsession with supply and demand as the poodle of powerful corporate interests.

I’m a little concerned with De Schutter’s plans to focus more on the connection between women’s rights and food security. This territory is already well supplied.

A second term is a time to work on the trick of exercising greater political influence within the neutrality of the UN brief.
